Updated
September 21, 2026: added six guides: comparing alcohol wash, sugar roll and sticky-board sampling; what an HBHC mite threshold means by colony phase; what Mississippi State's and Missouri's extension budgets say a first hive costs; what to look for in an inspection; when to feed which sugar syrup ratio; and a routing guide to state apiary inspectors. No calculator changed.
September 19, 2026: launched with the varroa mite count calculator (wash and sticky-board modes), the beehive inspection checklist and log, the sugar syrup calculator, the first-year cost calculator, and the beekeeping calendar with nine regional pages.
HBHC's 9th edition lowers the varroa thresholds
The Honey Bee Health Coalition moved Tools for Varroa Management to a 9th edition (June 11, 2026), lowering the promptly-control thresholds in Table 1 from the 8th edition ("Eighth Edition - August 1, 2022") for every colony phase:
| Colony phase | 8th edition: control not needed | 8th edition: control | 9th edition: promptly control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dormant* | <1% | >1% | ≥1% |
| Population Increase | <2% | >2-3% | ≥1% |
| Peak Population | <2% | >3% | ≥2% |
| Population Decrease | <2% | >2-3% | ≥2% |
The varroa calculator uses the 9th edition's thresholds. The 8th edition's numbers are shown only on this page, for reference against what changed.
